Another really interesting newsletter. I think in the world of non-fiction an agent is less necessary. I know of lots of journalists who have published lots of successful non-fiction books without an agent. But you do need to know what you are doing and need to talk to lots of other authors about the pros and cons. I think it's very different if you don't come from a journalism background. I have never felt the need for an agent but if I moved across to fiction I might think differently.
I'm intrigued more and more by self-publishing, too, as it has such autonomy, and means people can get those lead magnet books (and their creative words!) out there much faster and without the need to be 'picked'. Ooh, do you think you'd write fiction?
I don't mean self publishing. I mean cutting the middle person and going direct to a publisher yourself. The three books I have co-written have all been published by a mainstream publisher but we never used an agent to get the deal. And no, I wouldn't write fiction!
Ahh, I see! Oh, yes, gotcha! I have considered doing that as I have a lot of contacts at publishers... I wanted to write a book about freelancing but now I'd like it to be about careers more in general. I feel some sunlounger note taking coming on next week from my hols...

Most mainstream publishers won't accept unagented submissions these days though. There's an awful lot of gatekeeping.
